OUTLINE

ADED project in Senegal: Positive impact of hand-washing facilities

Meeting Victorine Ndiaye and the Nanaay development project
In 2017, ADED met Victorine Ndiaye, a Senegalese citizen involved in the Nanaay camp development project, located on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean in the Sine-Saloum region of Palmarin Facao. Faced with the challenges of access to fresh water in this camp, ADED offered its support by providing hand-washing facilities equipped with The Drop® tap and a pedal pump.

Talibés at the heart of our humanitarian project
A « talibé » is a pupil or disciple learning the Koran. In Senegal, talibés are generally boys aged between 5 and 15, often from modest families, frequently in rural areas, and entrusted to a Koranic master for their religious education. Our partner Jérémie and his team look after between 200 and 300 children every week on their day off.

Through our project, we sought to give these children a more normal childhood. We provided support by distributing The Drop® taps, games and medicines in collaboration with a nurse. In addition, we provided direct support to Jérémie to assist him in his work.

The importance of microbiological monitoring in wastewater projects
In May 2019, we launched a microbiological validation study of a hand-washing device equipped with The Drop®, in partnership with the Laboratoire de Traitement des Eaux Usées (LATEU) of l’IFAN (l’Institut Fondamental d’Afrique Noire) in Senegal.

Since the project began, a total of 200 families in three disadvantaged districts of the Médina-Gounass commune and 5 schools in the Guédiawaye arrondissement have benefited from this hand-washing device, and are being monitored by LATEU to study changes in hand contamination. The initial results of the study have shown a positive impact, particularly in terms of saving water in households and reducing the quantity of indicator bacteria on hands.

Fighting the pandemic: Our contribution to preventing COVID-19
In April 2021, we launched a new project in collaboration with the A.E.E. Association, which works for the holistic development of children, as part of the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. The teaching and learning establishments where A.E.E. works are located in rural or outlying areas, where access to water for hand hygiene is often difficult and hygiene and sanitation conditions are not always met.

The aim of this project is to train learners to promote good hygiene practices within families and communities, to install hand-washing facilities equipped with The Drop® in schools and to organise awareness-raising sessions on the importance of hand hygiene and the environment.
