Crucial support from ADED to La Chorrera after the earthquake

ADED was asked by LATMA, the initiator of the project, to provide technical and financial support for The Drop® in Ecuador. The village of La Chorrera, located near Pedernales on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, suffered major damage when an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck in April 2016.

Three major objectives for the reconstruction:

Installation of hand-washing facilities equipped with The Drop® tap: The aim of this measure was to provide village children with easy access to water for washing their hands, thereby promoting essential hygiene practices and reducing the risk of water-related illnesses.

Visiting families and distributing medicines: In partnership with the health centre, we visited families affected by the earthquake. The aim was to provide necessary medical care and establish a relationship of trust with the community.

Electrical installation for classroom lighting: We installed electrical infrastructure to light four classrooms in a local school. The aim was to create an environment conducive to learning, thereby enhancing access to education for children in the village.

Building a drinking water treatment plant
In the village of La Chonta, in the south of the country, a fruitful collaboration with the LATMA association was set up to resolve the crucial problem of water quality. Local residents were concerned about the lack of drinking water in the village and surrounding area. With the support of the H2O association and the Antenna foundation, we built a drinking water treatment plant. The plant was equipped with a flocculation tank, a backwash sand filter and a chlorination process, guaranteeing the supply of clean, safe water to the community.

Improving awareness and living conditions
In-depth training was provided during two on-site visits in July 2018 and March 2019. Local staff were specifically trained to operate and maintain the facility. Through fun and recreational activities, the entire population was made aware of the importance of hand hygiene, with the use of The Drop® tap as a practical tool to promote these healthy practices. In addition, distributions of school supplies, sports equipment, reading glasses and medicines helped to improve the quality of life and prospects of the inhabitants of La Chonta.
