OUTLINE

Ribeirinhas" communities along the Amazon

To a certain extent, the Brazilian government has delegated the development of these communities to local non-governmental organisations. Every year, the Brazilian Ministry of Health visits these remote areas, accessible only by boat.

ADED has worked with local partners, in particular Genivaldo Febrônio and his team, to improve the living conditions of these Ribeirinha communities in the Brazilian Amazon. Every month, these partners visit the communities to provide care, training and support for their development.

During our visits in 2016 and 2017, in collaboration with our partners, we installed around fifty hand-washing facilities equipped with The Drop® eco-sanitary taps in the communities of Abacaxis and Marimari.

WATA and antenna technology: a powerful combination for access to drinking water

In 2017, a group of young people joined us to visit communities and promote the importance of hand hygiene through hand washing, as well as drinking water using WATA technology, the Antenna platform. This technology disinfects water, making it safe to drink. In addition, we were able to bring along various musical instruments, football equipment and many other resources.

The Vale do Jequitinhonha region and the Jefferson Barros Saraiva initiative

The Vale do Jequitinhonha region, located in the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais and Bahia, in the south-east of the country, is known for its modest social indicators. It also has characteristics typical of the hinterland of north-eastern Brazil. However, it offers exceptional natural beauty and cultural richness, marked by the heritage of Portuguese, black and indigenous cultures.

Jefferson Barros Saraiva runs a holiday centre for disadvantaged children and teenagers in an area suffering from water stress problems. At the suggestion of a friend, Jean-Marc and Nathalie Waridel visited the valley in December 2020. As well as raising awareness and installing around thirty hand-washing facilities fitted with The Drop® taps, they took part in projects to ensure the supply and treatment of water in regions where this resource is precious because of its scarcity.
