OUTLINE

The ADED handpump is transforming life in Santos Reyes

When the rainy season no longer paralyses the department of Beni

The department of Beni, which is where the village of Santos Reyes is situated, used to be isolated from the rest of Bolivia during the rainy season. Happily, measures have been taken by the government to solve this problem, resulting in the year-round accessibility of this road. This improvement in accessibility has greatly enhanced the community’s connection to essential services and opportunities beyond the village.

A specific geographic context

It is in Santos Reyes, with its local geographic context, that ADED has undertaken a project aiming to solve its water supply challenges. Situated in the amazonian basin and close to the foothills of the Cordillera, north east of La Paz, the water depth varies from 1m to 5m. The soil, which is pebble-free and composed of sand, offers perfect conditions for drilling.

IMPROVED ACCESSIBILITY THANKS TO ROAD NETWORK UPGRADE:

The project contributed to improved accessibility in the department of Béni by making the road passable throughout the year and even in the rainy season, especially with regards to the village of Santos Reyes.  This enhances connection and access to services for the whole community.

OPERATING DEMONSTRATIONS AND TRAINING:

As well as installing the pumps, operating demonstrations were also given to the villagers. This educational approach aims to ensure that the pump is used appropriately, guaranteeing sustainable management of the water resource.

SOLUTIONS ADAPTED TO LOCAL GEOGRAPHY:

Bearing in mind the geographical characteristics of the region, most notably the water depth of between 1m and 5m, the project chose a technological and targeted approach by setting up a manual pump adapted to pebble-free and sandy soil. 

IMPROVEMENT IN THE SUPPLY OF WATER

Installing a manual water pump allows the population of Santos Reyes to stock up on water more simply and efficiently. This contributes directly to the improvement of the daily life conditions of the people as it ensures reliable access to a clean water source.

ACHIEVEMENTS

  • ACCESSIBILITÉ AMÉLIORÉE GRÂCE À L'AMÉNAGEMENT ROUTIER :
    Le projet a contribué à l'amélioration de l'accessibilité dans le département du Béni, en particulier au village de Santos Reyes, en rendant la route praticable tout au long de l'année, même pendant la saison des pluies. Cela favorise la connectivité et l'accès aux services pour la communauté.
  • INSTALLATION DE 2 POMPES À EAU MANUELLES :
    ADED a réussi à installer 2 pompes à pédale dans le village de Santos Reyes, offrant ainsi un moyen efficace d'approvisionnement en eau. Cette initiative vise à répondre aux besoins fondamentaux de la population en matière d'eau potable.
  • DÉMONSTRATIONS ET FORMATION :
    En plus de l'installation de la pompe, des démonstrations ont été fournies aux habitants du village. Cette approche éducative vise à assurer une utilisation adéquate de la pompe, garantissant ainsi une gestion durable de la ressource en eau.
  • SOLUTIONS ADAPTÉES AU CONTEXTE GÉOGRAPHIQUE :
    Compte tenu des caractéristiques géographiques de la région, notamment la profondeur de l'eau entre 1.0 m et 5.0 m, le projet a choisi une approche technologique adaptée en installant une pompe manuelle, adaptée pour un sol sablonneux sans cailloux.
